Weekly Reader Poll: Obama!

We’ve been waiting for the results with bated breath. And now we can report that the Weekly Reader Poll of 125,000 elementary, middle, and high school students has Barack Obama winning the presidency in a landslide.

According to the poll:

Obama 54.7 percent

McCain 42.9 percent

But before you all conclude that Fred2Blue has jumped the shark in reporting the results of a freakin’ ”kiddie poll”, consider this: The Weekly Reader poll has accurately predicted 12 of the past 13 presidential election winners. That’s 92 percent accurate!

And it all makes sense; children tend to make their parents’ presidential preferences their own.

But wait, there’s more. From the news release:
The majority of students favored Obama, even picking him in the Republican’s home state of Arizona. In addition, the Democratic candidate won 420 electoral votes in 33 states and Washington, D.C. That beat McCain’s 118 electoral votes from 17 states.

That’s really ambitious; according to the WR poll, Obama turns Texas, Alaska, Montana, South Dakota and Georgia blue. We just don’t see all that happening.

Weekly Reader’s poll was tabulated in conjunction with Zogby International, an organization whose own polls show the presidential race a lot closer than most.

Of course, all of this is moot if Mommy and Daddy don’t show up to vote next Tuesday, Nov. 4. Still, a 92 percent record of accuracy is pretty amazing.
