Dick Cranwell is the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia and was the Democratic Leader in the House of Delegates during his 3 decade stint in the General Assembly. So if he plans on running for statewide office, like many people are currently speculating, it’s a very big deal.
Two of the biggest bloggers in the commonwealth, Lowell Feld and Vivian Paige, both have rock-solid sources telling them that Cranwell is indeed gearing up for a run at…..something. Lowell’s source swears that Dick Cranwell is preparing to run for Attorney General. But now Vivian Paige says that her sources are telling her that he’s actually running for Lt. Governor, a claim backed up by the Virginia Lawyer’s Weekly.
Russell Co. BOS at-large member Jon Bowerbank and presumably Jody Wagner, who just announced her resignation as VA Secretary of Finance, are already running for the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor. Del. Steve Shannon, on the other hand, is the only announced Democratic candidate for Atty. General. (For anyone living on the moon for the past several months, Sen. Creigh Deeds and Del. Brian Moran are battling it out for the Democratic nomination or Governor.)
In the GOP it’s the other way around. The nominees for Governor (McDonnell) and Lt. Governor (Bolling) are already set, and it’s a free-for-all for the Republican Atty. General nomination.
UPDATE: Vivian says she heard from Cranwell himself that he’s running for Lt. Governor.
