From the people that brought us “The country’s economic foundation and, more crucially, its physical security are safer if (Bush) wins a second term” three and a half years ago…Donnie Johnston comes up with this argument to justify his mocking of the recent televised presidential debates.
Even in the midst of a Hollywood writer’s strike, the debates that were held couldn’t get enough of a TV audience to create a minor blip in the Nielsen ratings. “I Love Lucy,” 55 years into re-runs, attracted more viewers.
Oh really Donnie?
Cable TV Ratings Jan. 28-Feb. 3:
1. “California Democratic Debate” (Thursday, 8 p.m.), CNN, 5.91 million homes, 8.32 million viewers.
2. “Anderson Cooper 360″ (Thursday, 9:52 p.m.), CNN, 5.49 million homes, 7.7 million viewers.
3. “WWE Raw” (Monday, 9 p.m.), USA, 3.9 million homes, 5.98 million viewers.
……
14. “California Republican Debate” (Wednesday, 8 p.m.), CNN, 2.92 million homes, 4.01 million viewers.
And the more recent Democratic debate in Austin, TX? Another 7.7 million viewers. Maybe the GOP-loving Free Lance-Star should worry about the fact that less than half the number of people watched their debate that same week.
Here’s another brilliant claim from Johnston; this one regarding Sen. John McCain’s age:
But we can’t bring age into this race because that would be both insensitive and politically incorrect.
What the heck is he talking about? People CONSTANTLY talk about McCain’s age, and he’s been asked about it NUMEROUS times. It’s never offended him or anyone!
What sound bite have we been hearing over and over again from McCain following his victory speech in Wisconsin a few days ago? “I’m not the youngest candidate but I am the most experienced.” (Which McCain says with a big smile on his face to boot.)
The age question being raised was also the most memorable moment from the 1984 debates between Reagan and Mondale. In ‘84 Pres. Reagan was the same age that Sen. McCain will be this year.

Sen. McCain recently described himself as being “old as dirt.”
Good analysis and factual points, Chris. You should forward it to Hillary Kanter for the FLS editorial page. You might have to condense it a bit but it’s worth a try.
